R.C.I.A. – Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

“Our hearts were burning within us.” – Psalm 139:13-14

The R.C.I.A. ministry consists of four steps:

1. Pre-Catechumenate: A time for inquirers to hear the Word and for the community members to listen to their questions.  This step concludes with the Rite of Acceptance/Welcome.

2. Catechumenate: A time for instruction in the faith, participation in community activities and prayer, and work with the community in the apostolic life of the church.  This step concludes with the Rite of Election.

3. Purification and Enlightenment: A forty-day focus on the deepening awareness of God’s grace through prayer and penance.  This period includes the powerful healing and reconciling community prayer called The Scrutinies and concludes with the Easter Vigil and the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).

4. Mystagogy: A time for deeper understanding of God’s Word, the sacraments, and the lived Christian life.  This is formally carried on during the fifty days of the Easter Season, but in reality, this step in the journey lasts the rest of the Christian’s life.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE – All parishioners may participate in this ministry by spreading the message of the R.C.I.A. program to family members, friends, and neighbors who might benefit from the community experience.  Also, parishioners are welcome to join the R.C.I.A. team and actively participate in the sessions, rites, and rituals, all of which offer unique opportunities for personal spiritual growth.  Finally, parishioners may participate by praying for the spiritual growth of all those who are actively involved.
